Winter purslane.

This little plant is called Winter Purslane. It is one of the mainstays of our winter salad bowl. We first sowed it about 7 years ago and it self-seeds every year. I dig it out at this time every year to make way for the summer crops and lo and behold it appears without fail every September ready for another winter. The goats really enjoy eating it and Daphne our donkey had some¬†too. If you have chickens they love it. I am experimenting with digging in a patch as a green manure. It is also known as Miner’s Lettuce and Claytonia. Winter Purslane is one of the highest sources of vitamin C in the plant world, even higher than oranges.
