Nasturtium or Tropaeolum. There are many varieties, climbers, semi-trailers and even a dwarf variety. These ones self-seed every year in our polytunnel. Colours very from light yellow to bright orange, you certainly won’t miss them! They like a poor soil, rich soil means lots of leaves and less flowers. All parts of the plant are edible. The flowers look lovely decorating a salad, the leaves have a peppery kick. The seeds can be pickled as a caper substitute. We have’nt tried this ourselves so I can’t vouch for it. Nasturtiums are also a good companion plant in the garden as they attract Hoverflies. The Hoverfly larvae love to dine on greenfly so it’s a win win situation. Beautiful, edible and useful. That’s Nasturtiums for ya!
